Hometown vacationer...

I'm back, stateside in my hometown, Victoria, BC. 6 days in Portland and San Fransisco and the first trip I've taken in a hell of a long time. There is a sense of loss that comes with returning to your hometown after experiencing a foreign city. The newness and excitement of that city lingers like the morning after a good dance party while we try to hold onto the comforting unfamiliarity.

I'm back at my favorite spot - the Dockside Green at Cafe Fantastico/Fol Epi - and am reminded that I can seek out and grab that feeling again without going very far. With a view of the harbor industrial behind me, a vaguely warm spring sun and my chilled feet in their flip flops hopeful that this is the first of many a barefoot day to come, I'm renewing my commitment to newness right here in Victoria.

I'll keep this short as we know a short attention span run riot is a dangerous weapon...I encourage all of you to venture out bravely into uncharted neighborhoods and visit the smile of a barrista you have not yet said 'hello' to or to bury your face in the untrimmed grass of a seemingly distant park - breach the barriers of your '-fords' and your '-woods ' just to say that you gave it a shot and all you found was yet another car dealership. Until every corner is visited and every view is taken in you, too, can visit your own city...hometowns are new towns - don't stop looking.
